Add options and variants to a product
Give a product variants by size, colour or any other option, each with its own price, SKU and stock, and edit them all from one table.
On this page
Before you start
- The Manage products permission in your role.
An option is a choice the customer makes, such as size or colour. Every combination of option values becomes a variant with its own price, SKU and stock. In a restaurant you can make sizes options, or use add-on groups for choices that add to the item's price.
Add options
Step 1: Turn options on
Open the product and, in Options and variants, turn on This product has options. The Pricing and Inventory sections disappear, because price and stock now belong to each variant.
Step 2: Add an option and its values
Click Add option, type the Option name, such as “Size”, then type each value and press
Enter. You can give a value a Swatch colour so its colour shows on the store.Step 3: Choose how variants are created
Under When saving the options, choose Create every missing combination to create them all, or Only keep the combinations I add to add them yourself.
Step 4: Save and review
On a saved product, the Review the variant changes dialog lists the new, renamed and deleted variants. Click Save options, or Keep editing to go back.
Edit the variants
The variants table shows each variant's price, compare-at price, SKU, barcode, available stock, image and whether it is active. Select rows, then use the tools:
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Set price | One price for every selected variant. |
| Set compare-at | The struck-through price for the selected variants. |
| Generate SKUs | SKUs from a pattern: {BASE} for the base, and {1} to {3} for the option values. |
| Reorder | The order variants appear in on the store, by dragging. |
| Add combination | A variant for a combination that isn't in the table. |
Limits and deleting variants
- Up to 3 options per product, 50 values per option and 100 variants per product.
- To delete variants that have stock, tick Also delete variants that have stock in the review dialog.
- A variant reserved by open orders can't be deleted; fulfil or cancel those orders first.
- A product only shows on the store when at least one variant is active.
How many variants can a product have?
Up to 100, from at most 3 options with 50 values each.
Should restaurant sizes be options or add-ons?
Either works. Options give each size its own price and stock; add-ons add a price difference to the item's price and can be shared across many items.
Why did the Pricing section disappear?
When you turn on This product has options, price and stock move to the variants table, so each variant has its own price.
